I can't help but remember that it was ten years ago that Aleks, Sean, Chalmers and I, in all our teenage glory, formed the group Pixie Massacre. Ten years ago I got my first electric guitar as an early Christmas present from my parents. I remember it was about this time we went looking in all the pawn shops in London for a good deal on amps. This was cool because we felt so free driving around in Sean's corolla blasting the music of our generation as the snow kept coming down. We were told by a grizzled, and savvy pawnbroker (who could very well have been a roadie,or a member of some Trooper lite band in his prime) that although he had bass amps on for cheap, plugging a guitar in and blasting it would "blow the fucker up". We resorted to buying a "Y" cable enabling us to plug our electric guitars (Sean's and mine) into the small Squire amp Sean got for Christmas.
This time ten years ago, I experimented with some add9 chords and wrote words to the chord progression I composed. I needed help with the melody and arrangement but it was my first crack at songwriting.
What can I say, that feels like a lifetime away. I continue to make music inspired in part by my life now but in a way I think about how much I dreamed of achieving what I have today and the dream is still very much alive. All I have to do is think of my 17 year old self and I say "Do it for him".
